Creativity is the flame
that lights the dark
caverns we wander.
Welcome to
James Millikan Online
This website exists mainly to show my art: it's an art space (check the links at page top and bottom; click on “Art Gallery”). In addition to making art, I also think about art and everything else in life from a philosophical perspective – I really am a card-carrying philosopher – so “Philosophy” has a couple of philosophical pieces I’ve written. You can find background information in “About Me.” There is also a page of “Links” to other artists and art venues, mostly in Sonoma County, California, where I live, or nearby.
Besides all that, I’ve included a “Blog.” You just have to dash right up (or down) to click on the link to my blog! When I first created this website, I barely knew what a blog is. I thought it would be cool to have one. Well, I had no idea how cool! The rest of the website is like this lovely, imposing edifice erected on a hilltop: stately, standing tall, it’s waving tresses blowing in the wind, a pleased smile on its handsome, unchanging face. Ok, it’s the reference library.
The blog is where the action is. Seriously, you should be checking my blog at least once a week to keep up! My new art goes up there long before it makes it to my gallery. (Right now I'm working out how to revise the art gallery to feature new work, a lot of which is already on the blog.) I work out ideas on the blog. I talk about others’ art, art theory, and recommend stuff. I talk about whatever is going on in my life, especially my art, whether it's doodles or giant, weird works on paper! And I do welcome comments, any comments, because I’m a strong believer in community. I even occasionally print well-crafted spam!
I’ve made art all my life, though I had two other careers before art became central to my life ten years ago. The art shown here is drawings, paintings, and prints. I’ve made other art and i probably will again in future. I’ve made a tad of sculpture, and I’ve worked in theater in various capacities: acted, directed, danced, choreographed, and written. I figure any branch of art where I perch is just a temporary place to land. After all, there’s a whole tree!
