Art...and a bit of philosophy.

Gallery: Abstracts

My art mostly falls between “realistic” and “abstract.” I often start closer to the recognizable end of the spectrum. Gradually I work toward the other end, which seems to me actually closer to the real. I’m trying to make the invisible, visible.

All but two of these are oils on linen or canvas. “Love & God” is oil on paper; “Red Flash” is watercolor and heaven knows what else on paper. The earliest are “Ab Ex” (for “abstract expressionism”) and “Dreamscape.” Ab Ex is all on the surface: just paint. “Dreamscape” actually references objects, though in a surreal manner. “Red Flash” also is all surface. Each of the others is doing something beyond this, pulling you in, telling a story, showing you/evoking a mood, even the empty seeming “Search for Meaning.”

“Coast Sunset” is my well meant though unworthy tribute to Mark Rothko. He would never have made a painting so referential, least of all in plein air. It does what I hoped it would. I used Rothko’s form to convey my content. Clicking can enlarge small images.
